Confident or Arrogant

Johnny Manziel aka Johnny Football is all the buzz these days.  Some want to know why is everyone making such a big deal of this 20 year old kid and others want Johnny to grow up and just concentrate on football.

Manziel who is the quarterback for the Texas A&M Aggies was the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy.  He has stated that he is all about “Enjoying life to the fullest” and he has definitely been making the most of it after his Heisman win.  We have seen him sitting court side at NBA games, spring break at Cabo and playing golf at Pebble Beach.  We know all of this because he has shared everything on twitter and instagram.  We’ve seen pictures of him drinking, holding large sums of money and hanging with friends.  Which is something pretty normal that most people his age would do – but let’s face it Manziel is not your average 20 year old.

There comes a time when we all have to be accountable for our actions and especially when you are a “student athlete” who plays football at a top university you really have to keep that in mind.

Recently Manziel left the prestigious Manning (that’s Peyton Manning) Passing Academy early because he “overslept.” According to Manziel it was no big deal and as he stated “just another day.” But was it just another day? How many folks are asked to be counselors at the Manning Passing Academy?  Then days later during the SEC Media Day he pretty much told everyone to get over it and he would not answer the question “had you been drinking the night before you left the Academy?” All of a sudden he didn’t feel the need to be so open.  This is where he needs to be careful – once you put it out there in the twitterverse then you are fair game to all the scrutiny.  Manziel wants everyone to just concentrate on football when he was the one who made it about everything else during the off-season.  Now it seems that 22-year-old AJ McCarron gets it – the Alabama quarterback said during the SEC Media Day that –

“I know I’ll always be watched when I step out the door. I can’t go out and act a fool in public.” He also said “My role as an Alabama quarterback prevents me from being a normal 22-year-old kid.” He added, “But not every 22-year-old is doing what I’m doing, either.”

I find it interesting that some feel the need to give Manziel a pass because he’s a “kid” and he’s “only 20.” But we can’t pick and choose who is a kid and who is a grown man.  Yasiel Puig, outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers has been getting crucified in the media for being “arrogant” and “cocky” when all he is doing is hitting homers and being a powerhouse in Major League baseball.  Yes Puig keeps to himself and has stated he doesn’t care for all the media attention but is that arrogant? Have you seen pictures of Puig who is just 22 years old putting himself in compromising situations?

I’ve recently seen an article that stated “I hope Yasiel Puig isn’t another Cam Newton” implying that he hopes he’s not as arrogant.  Since the same had been implied to Cam Newton as well; maybe folks need a reminder to what arrogant and confident mean –

Confident – Feeling or showing confidence in one self; self-assured

Arrogant – Having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one’s own importance or abilities

So, based on those definitions I am feeling pretty confident that Johnny Football does need to concentrate on football and only football right now.
