Don’t get me wrong I’m a Chad Johnson fan.  When he was in the NFL I appreciated his off the wall antics – he made the game interesting and he was a decent receiver. But unfortunately, while in court recently he embarrassed himself and if he wanted to show his fans and the NFL that he had “changed” and was ready for another chance playing football I think he blew it.

First of all, Chad was in court for probation violation on his domestic violence case against his now ex-wife Evelyn Lozada.  That alone is serious enough and while in court after his attorney did such a great job with a plea deal Chad decided to give his attorney the obligatory slap on the butt like they had just called the next play in a huddle.

Well judge Kathleen McHugh was not amused and said –

“I don’t know that you’re taking this whole thing seriously. I just saw you slap your attorney on the backside. Is there something funny about this? The whole courtroom was laughing. I’m not going to accept these plea negotiations. This isn’t a joke.”

After this as seen on the video provided by TMZ that is circulating – Chad let’s judge McHugh know that he wasn’t joking and apologized for his actions.  But the judge wasn’t hearing it and ordered him to spend 30 days in jail.

Chad later tweeted –

“Love me through the good and the bad because I’m gone love you regardless … See you in 30.”

Now is 30 days to harsh? Yes but those funny antics on the sidelines during a football game don’t work in court.  There comes a time when you have to grow up and take some responsibility.  Chad should have first of all showed up in court wearing a suit and apologized profusely for violating his probation.  This wasn’t a probation violation for a speeding ticket.  This was for domestic violence and the NFL is watching and I don’t think they are laughing anymore at Ochocinco.
