What LIES Beneath

A lie is defined as – “a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.”

As we all know people lie. I’ve heard people say “oh it was only a little white lie” even so it is still a lie. So what is it about athletes and lying? The fact is the sports world is not foreign to athletes and lies. As fans we have heard it all from Pete Rose to Marion Jones to Tiger Woods and the list goes on and on.

We can now add Lance Armstrong to that list of athletes. But Lance Armstrong’s lying is unique in that he had been doing it for so long that some wondered if he would ever admit to any of the lies. Well he did – he sat down with Oprah and spilled his guts and apologized.  Yes he did use performance enhancement drugs; yes he bullied people, and sued the hell out of people etc etc etc. During the second part of the interview Lance showed some real remorse; when he talked about watching his son defend him and how that hurt him inside – you could see the raw emotion.

Unlike those athletes who have had the opportunity to redeem themselves over the years and show everyone how they have changed and grown. We won’t be seeing Lance in the Tour de France anytime soon.  So what can he do?

Some have said “he didn’t seem sorry enough” some felt he did.  At the end of the day that’s on Lance and truly not for us to question or judge any longer.  He will have to look at himself in the mirror years down the road.

So even though his name will forever be on the list of the athletes who have lied and lost everything; he can also one day be on the redemption list and don’t we all love underdogs!
